I’ve been thinking about this after comparing two bids on the same set of drawings. The scope was identical, but the pricing structure and level of detail were completely different. One estimate felt very surface-level, while the other had clear quantity breakdowns, labor assumptions, and notes about potential risk areas.
It made me realize how much the final numbers can depend on the individual behind them. A skilled construction cost estimator doesn’t just plug numbers into software they interpret drawings, question missing details, consider sequencing, and factor in real-world site conditions. That judgment call element seems to be where a lot of accuracy comes from.
I’m curious how others see it. Do you think estimating quality is mostly about experience, or do systems and software level the playing field? And have you ever seen a project run into trouble because the initial estimate lacked depth or critical thinking?
